Social and Emotional Learning
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is essential for individual development, mental and emotional health, and relationships with others. SEL helps us create strong self-awareness, social awareness, self-management skills, relationship skills, and responsible decision making skills. By strengthening these areas we can promote healthier, happier, and more successful individuals. Children's ability to manage emotions, develop healthy and confident self-identities, overcome obstacles, create healthy relationships, and achieve goals is strengthened the more they interact with others who demonstrate and promote these skills.
How can you promote social and emotional learning?
Children benefit from positive interactions in a variety of settings and with multiple people. It is important to promote SEL in daily interactions as well as specific settings. Understood.org offers information to help understand and implement SEL. This page from Understood.org offers easy to implement, low tech games to use at home, while this page offers printable worksheets to help promote a growth mindset. A growth mindset can help individuals overcome challenges so their self-esteem and overall success can increase.
